Message from

H.E. the Ambassador of Algeria to the United States of America

To the Algerian community

On the occasion of the upcoming referendum

On the Draft Charter for Peace and National Reconciliation.

My Dear Compatriots,

Algeria is living through a crucial phase of her history.

After more than a decade of terrorism, where her children were torn apart and were subject to great pain, she has overcome the most difficult challenges with courage and determination.  Algeria has succeeded in restoring her political stability, strengthening the rule of law and democracy, and reestablishing her bases of growth.

Today, under the leadership of President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, our country is pursuing the consolidation of a vast enterprise of renewal and recovery with the completion of the process of national reconciliation aiming at establishing a lasting peace in an appeased and stable society.

My dear compatriots, on Sunday, August 14th, 2005, the President of the Republic addressed the electoral body and announced the holding of a referendum on a Draft Charter for Peace and National Reconciliation. He called on all Algerian men and women to “have the courage to move towards a genuine national reconciliation, while keeping in mind the positive results given by the Civil Concord and the hopes it has generated.”

On Thursday, September 29th, the Algerian voters will be called upon to express themselves on this initiative which is a challenge to their faith and patriotism.

The Algerian community living in the United States of America has always demonstrated its patriotism and responded whenever the Nation has called. I am convinced that this time it will again show its commitment.

Similarly to previous elections, registered voters can perform their electoral duty in the United States. Polling stations will be open from Saturday, the 24th to Thursday the 29th of September 2005 at the Embassy in Washington, D.C., and at the Permanent Mission of Algeria to the United Nations in New York City. On Saturday, September 24th and Sunday the 25th, polling stations will be set up in Boston, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, and San Francisco.

Dear compatriots, I hope that you will take advantage of this opportunity to fulfill your civic responsibility.

With my best personal regards,

Amine Kherbi

Ambassador of Algeria to the United States of America
