Algeria has taken the chairmanship of the Group of 77 + China to which it was elected in September 2011 by the group at its 35th annual ministerial meeting, held on the margins of the UN General Assembly.

This is Algeria’s third turn at the helm of the group, having already assumed the chairmanship in 1982 and 1994. Chairmanship is held on a rotating basis by Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Caribbean.

Algeria was selected to represent Africa at the summit meeting of the African Union held in June 2011 in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea.

Items on Algeria’s agenda as chair of the group include economic, financial and development issues and UN reform, where coordinating efforts by members of G77 and China is useful and determining.
