Starting next January 23, a city plaza in the Venezuelan capital Caracas will bear the name of Emir Abdelkader, displaying a statue honoring the Algerian national hero and statesman.
At the foot of the statue, a plaque will bear a brief description of Emir Abdelkader’s life.
Emblematic figure of the struggle for national liberation and founder of the modern Algerian state, Emir Abdelkader (1808-1883) had led a vast popular resistance movement against colonial forces in an area in Western Algeria extending to modern-day central area of Médéa, in the Titteri region.
On the other hand, Algeria had inaugurated in 2009 a commemorative stele honoring Simon Bolívar, liberator of Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador and Bolivia. Born in 1783, the South American military officer and politician died in 1830 after having participated decisively in the national independence of several Latin American countries, including Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Panama, Peru and Venezuela.
