Algeria will take "appropriate steps" to ensure the defense of its interests and "maximal" protection of its borders, Mr. Amar Belani, Spokesman for the foreign ministry declared today.

"Algeria will preempt all possible developments in the Sahel region and, as a consequence, it will take in all sovereignty appropriate measures to ensure the def3ense of its interests and maximal protection of its borders," Mr. Belani said.

The situation prevailing in the Sahel is a source of concerns for the international community, including the countries of the region, because of terrorist activities and political instability in Mali.
