National Martyrs Day was observed today at the ministry for foreign affairs at a ceremony held in tribute to the memory of fallen martyrs. The ceremony opened with a salute to the flag and a recitation of the Fatiha, the opening verse of the holy Quran.

The ceremony was held under the auspices of Minister for Foreign Affairs Mourad Medelci and Minister Delegate to the Overseas National Community Belkacem Sahli and was attended by diplomats and ministry staff.

The ceremony featured as well a conference titled "Anniversary and Lessons Learned" presented by former war veteran and former minister Abdelhafidh Amokrane. The lecturer underscored the significance of observance of national festivals and day celebrations, namely the day devoted to martyrs for national independence whose ultimate sacrifice enabled "Algeria to become an independent state and its people to enjoy freedom and work toward building their nation."
