Meeting of the Sahel countries in Nouakchott: AQIM and Boko Haram on the agenda

Combating AQIM and Boko Haram terrorist organizations is on the agenda of a meeting scheduled for January 23 and 24 in the Mauritanian capital Nouakchott and regrouping the foreign ministers of the countries of the Sahel region (Algeria, Niger, Mali and Mauritania) as well as Nigeria.

An international meeting on security in the Sahel, called Algiers II, is scheduled to convene “by next February” in one of the countries of the region, Minister Delegate for Maghreb and African Affairs Abdelkader Messahel announced today in Brussels.

 

Algeria elected to chair the meetings of the Convention on the Prohibition of Biological Weapons

Algeria was unanimously elected to chair the 2012 annual meetings of the Convention on the Prohibition of Biological Weapons. The election took place on the margins of proceedings of the Review Conference of Member States to the convention, held in Geneva, Switzerland, on 5-22 December, 2011.

 

Security in the Sahel: Perception of the terrorist threat is now shared by the countries of the Sahel and their extra-regional partners

The countries of the Sahel involved in securing the Sahel are now viewed by their extra-regional partners (EU and US) as a grouping with a “shared strategy” and terrorist threat is perceived in similar fashion by all the parties involved, said Minister Delegate for Maghreb and African Affairs Abdelkader Messahel, speaking in Brussels on December 8.

Delegates from the countries of the Sahel region (Algeria, Mali, Niger and Mauritania) joined other participants from the European Union at a meeting on security and development convened on December 8 in Brussels.
