Malian Presient Amadou Toumani Touré made a four-day official visit in Algeria intended to give new impetus to Algerian-Malian relations and to lay the foundations for more efficient bilateral and regional cooperation able to face the terrorist threat in the Sahel region.

At its 18th session, the United Nations Human Rights Council adopted a resolution introduced by Algeria on human rights and issues related to hostage-taking by terrorists. Backed by the African Group, the draft resolution was adopted by consensus by the Council on September 29.

In an interview granted to the Algerian press agency APS (Algérie Presse Service), U.S. State Department Coordinator for Counterterrorism, Mr. Daniel Benjamin, called the Algiers counterterrorism conference convening on September 7 and 8, 2011, “a unique opportunity taking place at a timely juncture.”
