The African Union (AU) appreciates the counterterrorism initiatives taken by Algeria in the Sahel region, declared on December 13 in Algiers the AU Commissioner for Peace and Security Ramtane Lamamra.

 

Counterterrorism: Algeria's approach can be a model for others in the region

Algeria has adopted “a very efficient” approach to the fight against terrorism and can be a model for the other countries of the region, said British Major General Robin Searby, speaking in London on November 30.

 

The Sahel countries are fully capable of responding to the terrorist threat

The countries of the Sahel region “are fully capable” of responding to the terrorist threat in their area, said Presidential Advisor Kamel Rezzag-Bara on November 30 in London, in a statement to Algerian Channel 3 radio (Chaîne III).

US Assistant Secretary for Near Eastern Affairs Jeffrey Feltman visited Algeria October 20-22. Mr Feltman met with President of the Republic Abdelaziz Bouteflika., Prime Minister Ahmed Ouyahia, and Foreign Affairs Minister, Mourad Medelci. Both sides emphasized the significant advances in Algerian-American relations and undertook to pursue cooperation.

Counterterrorism: The United States wish to deepen their relations with Algeria

Washington – The United States wish to “deepen” their relations with Algeria in the fight against terrorism, because these relations are “absolutely essential”, said the Coordinator for Counterterrorism at the U.S. State Department, Mr. Daniel Benjamin. The U.S. official was speaking at a press conference in Washington, during which he reviewed U.S. counterterrorism policy and presented his views on some of the aspects of this scourge.
