The 22nd Pan-African Festival of Cinema and Television (FESPACO), scheduled to convene in the Burkina Faso capital of Ouagadougou (from February, 26th to march, 5th), will regroup 28 African countries and a total of 195 movies of various types, including 12 from Algeria. Our country will enter two features movies (“Essaha”, a musical comedy By Dahmane Ouzid, and “Voyage à Alger” by Abdelkrim Bahloul) in competition for the “Yennenga Gold Stallion” award.
In the shorts category, Algeria will participate with two productions, “Garagouz” by Abdenour Zahzah and “Khouya” by Yanis Koussim. “Dans le silence, je sens rouler la terre” by Lakhdar Tati and “Le docker noir, Sembene Ousmane” by Fatma-Zohra Zaamoum will be entered in the documentary competition. Algeria will also compete in the made-for-television fiction movies with “Le dernier voyage” by Djamel Azizi. Four other movies will also be submitted in off-competition official selection.
Algeria first participation in FESPACO dates back to 1970, when the 2nd festival was held. Since then, Algeria has taken part without fail in all subsequent editions of the pan-African cinema and television festival. In 1985, an Algerian feature movie, “L’histoire d’une rencontre” by Brahim Tsaki, was awarded the “Yennenga Golden Stallion”.
