Chaabi Hafla (Alexandria, Va, March 9th, 2013)
On Saturday evening, March 9th, Algerian famous Chaabi singer Abdelkader Chaou will perform in Alexandria, Va starting at 8 PM in LEE CENTER THEATER, 1108 Jefferson Street, Alexandria,VA.
Born in the Casbah of Algiers (Algeria), on November 10, 1941, Abdelkader Chaou is one of the most famous interpreters of Algerian chaabi music, a beautiful rhythmic cocktail of Andalusian, Berber, Arabic, and Flamenco traditions, that was the heart and soul of cosmopolitan Algiers in the 1940s.
He studied music at the Conservatory of Algiers, led at the time by Hadj Mohamed El Anka. He participated to modernizing the chaâbi music, introducing instruments such as the mandolin, banjo, piano and guitar, to make its style more alive and attractive. Abdelkader Chaou gets an explosive success in the 1970s.
His musical repertoire contains, as well, sad and cheerful melodies, borrowed from the Andalusian music.
