Algerian musical star Abdelkader Chaou gives a concert in Washington
Algérie Presse Service (APS) - March 10, 2013
Abdelkader Chaou, the famous interpreter of Chaabi style music, performed yesterday in Washington at a concert celebrating International Women's Day, much to the delight of the Algerian community living in the United States, with whole families and groups of friends drive in from surrounding areas.
Organized by the Embassy of Algeria and the Algerian American Association of greater Washington, the musical evening was held at a hall bursting at the seams with people who came not only from the Washington area and surrounding states of Virginia and Maryland, but also from as far as Pennsylvania and North Carolina.
Launching the concert with his famous "Istikhbar", Chaou went on for four hours, singing most of his successful pieces, and dug into the rich Algerine musical repertoire to perform other Chaabi and Hawzi songs.
Chaou's performance generated a fantastic ambience in the concert hall, particularly the aisles leading to the stage which were turned into impromptu dance floors by people entranced into "Berwali" and "Heddawi" dances by the rhythmic songs interpreted by Chaou.
After Washington, Abdelkader Chaou will head next week to San Francisco, where other fans are waiting for another great concert.
