Winner of Best Film Scenery and Best Film Score at the 23rd Pan-African Cinema and Television Film festival (FESPACO) recently held in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, "Zabana!" retraces the trial of the first Algerian freedom fighter to be guillotined in Algeria by French colonial forces and thus puts on trial the French justice system prevalent in colonial times.

"El Taib", on the other hand, is a fiction movie dealing with the consequences of terrorism in Algeria, as it tells the story of a repentant former terrorist returning to his village and reintegrates society.

"El Taib" won several awards in 2013 and in 2012, including the European Movie Theater Network Prize at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival, the "Silver Hugo" at the Chicago International Film festival, and Best Arab Film at the Doha Film Festival.

Established in 2005 by the AFI Silver Cultural Center of Silver Spring, MD, the New African Film Festival is held yearly with the goal of disseminating and promoting the most important and recent African film productions to moviegoers i n Maryland and the greater Washington area.
