*Sonatrach is the 12th largest oil and gas company in the world, according to the Petroleum Intelligence Weekly. It also ranks first in the Mediterranean region, fourth largest exporter of natural gas, and second for LPG in the world. The oil and gas company was established in December 1963, shortly after Algeria became independent in July 5, 1962, primarily to contribute to the country's economic development, generate revenues through exports of oil and gas, and meet the country's energy requirements.
