Ministry for Foreign Affairs – September 24, 2011

On the sidelines of the proceedings of the GCTF, in which he took part, Minister Delegate for Maghreb and African Affairs Abdelkader Messahel held talks in New York on September 25 with U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Johnnie Carson.

Part of regular consultations between Algeria and the United States, the meeting was also an opportunity for the two officials to discuss the conclusions reached at the Algiers International Conference on Partnership, Security and Development convened on September 7 and 8 between the countries of the area and their extra-regional partners.

U.S. officials have termed the conference “a significant opportunity” for counter-terrorism partnership, not only for the countries of the region and their extra-regional partners, but also for relations between Algeria and the United States.

Messrs. Messahel and Carson have also reviewed the situation prevailing in Africa, including Somalia and Nigeria, which recently suffered a terrorist attack directed at the UN representation in Abuja.

Mr. Messahel participated in the official launching of the Global Counter-Terrorism Forum, along with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and the minister for Foreign Affairs of the other founding members of the forum.
