Minister for Foreign Affairs Mourad Medelci met today in Algiers with U.S. Senator Robert Corker (R-TN) who is visiting Algeria as part of an African trip.

After his meeting with Mr. Medelci, Senator Corker said their talks included the situation in Mali and the Sahel region, as well as international issues.

"I was in Senegal and Mali before coming to Algeria, which I visit for the first time, and then I will travel on to Tunisia.

I had the opportunity today to talk with Mr. Medelci about the situation in the Sahel and to discuss other international issues," Mr. Corker said.

The U.S. senator was briefed by the head of Algerian diplomacy on the position held by Algeria with regards to the Sahel situation.

Senator Corker also discussed the partnership between Algeria and his country in the economic sector and counterterrorism, noting that the partnership "dates back to a long time."
